Let's speak about the crotch curve

Have you ever created a pant pattern in my design tool and ended up with a super-short, slanted crotch curve?

You’re not alone—I’ve seen this happen quite a bit over the past few months. Let’s take a quick look at why this happens.

This can happen if the optional inseam measurements are entered as being much too short (or too long, it works both ways).

These measurements aren't actually body measurements, but rather adjustment measurements. The idea is this: You create a set of measurements initially WITHOUT this inseam measurement, sew a mockup, and check the fit of the pants. If you then find that the crotch seam could be a little longer or shorter, you can take the length from the pattern itself and lengthen or shorten it accordingly.

The pants are initially created without these measurements. Then, the two crotch lengths are measured, and it's checked whether the length needs to be adjusted. This is done by rotating the upper part of the pant legs. This is how these strange, curved crotch lines appear when the measurement is simply incorrect.

I've added new images and text to the two measurements so that it should hopefully be clear that measurements should be taken directly on the pattern. Furthermore, the full crotch measurement has been changed to the back crotch length.

If you already have a working set of measurements with a total step length, you can continue to use it; my program will convert it.
